Philippe Garrel
Philippe Garrel: a man whose films are born of the same barenaked yearning and psychotic commitment they depict. All hearts hunger for destruction by phantastically adjoining themselves to total insolvent belief in love that will enliven them eternally in arrears. Garrel knows more than any man ever the pain of love living its course long after its narcotizing delights have depreciated (though its intensity has not). Love burns us up. We are left as singed cores. Mostly we are dead. When we are not dead we are haunted. Most of us in the Garrelosphere are haunted to death (as literally depicted in La frontière de l'aube (2008)). No filmmaker has ever been less sophisticated and hip while looking so sophisticated and hip.
