1998: When I Was a Geological Technician

Out of this universal feast of death, out of this extremity of fever, kindling the rain-washed evening sky to a fiery glow, may it be that one day Love shall mount?
- Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain

Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,
Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.
- Dylan Thomas, "Fern Hill"

I vividly recall reading The Magic Mountain for a large portion of the summer in question. The English translation I had left in French all of the passages where the characters speak said language amongst themselves. Do they still do it that way?
