Me and my mom, another trip out to Drum. To visit my uncle George. First he lost an eye to cancer and now he's recovering from recent brain surgery undergone in Calgary, the big shitty (in the parlance of reggae legend Peter Tosh). It's much cozier in Drum and folks who care about him there are able to provide love and assistance in an incomparably more copacetic/supportive environment. He's even able to get out and about and grab a milkshake and/or a copy of the Calgary Sun here and there. He likes to keep updated on Canadian football. He can now walk the length of the hall outside his room without the aid of his walker. For good reading material he's got Mystery Train: Images of America in Rock 'n' Roll Music by supreme music writer Greil Marcus. This delighted me. When I was a pugnacious teen intent on making a hell of a racket, George bought me Ranters & Crowd Pleasers: Punk in Pop Music, 1977-92 as a gift. I cherish that book and possess it still. George is a better all-around person than probably anybody else I ever knew.
